Fulbright Foreign Student Program in USA

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is provided by the binational Fulbright Commissions/Foundations or U.S. Embassies. The program is made to enable graduate students, young professionals and artists from across the globe to study and conduct research in United States. The program operates in more than 160 countries worldwide with about 4,000 foreign students receiving its scholarship each year. The program is hosted by the USA Universities and Academic Institutions.

These scholarships are sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. It is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program and is designed to nurture mutual understanding among nations through the educational and cultural exchange.Â

The Fulbright Scholarships is aimed to provide a range of opportunities for several groups of people in United State. The scholarships are open to people from economically disadvantaged groups, minorities and those from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds.

Scholarship Value

The Fulbright program provides grants channeled towards payment of student tuition fees, airfare, living stipend and health insurance. This fund is provided throughout the program duration.

How to Apply

The Fulbright Program Application is processed by binational Fulbright Commissions/Foundations or U.S. Embassies. Therefore, foreign students are to process their application through the Fulbright Commission/Foundation or U.S. Embassy in their home countries.

Required Documents

Academic Transcripts and Degree Certificates: All transcripts and degrees from a 4-year undergraduate degree or its equivalent – equivalent programs include international three-year bachelor programs or ACCA. PhD applicants must also submit their MPhil or MS degrees and transcripts.Â

GRE General Test and TOFEL: The minimum GRE score required to apply for the Fulbright is 138 for verbal and 136 for quantitative. But generally, accepted applicants have a GRE score in the upper percentiles. IELTS is not acceptable.

Essay: There are two essays for the Fulbright application. Each essay must be written in the space provided in the application form, which approximates to 800 words.

Recommendation Letters: You will need to have three recommendations submitted with your application by the application deadline. You can have 3 academic reference letters, or 2 academic and 1 professional or 2 professional and 1 academic. In other words, 1 academic reference letter is a must.
