Leiden University Excellence Scholarships

Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Program is designed for outstanding students who are Non-EU/EEA students that wish to widen their academic horizon internationally through a full-time master’s degree program at Leiden University, Netherland.

Leiden University is a research and oldest university in Netherland. It has seven faculties spread across Leiden and the Hague. It has 16 English-taught bachelor’s program and 200+ English-taught master’s program. The university is currently ranked ranked #141 in QS World University Rankings 2025.

Level of Study: Master Degree Program

Courses of Study: The Master Program is open the students from the following faculties: Archaeology, Humanities, Medicine/LUMC, Governance and Global Affairs, Law, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Science,  African Studies, International Institute for Asian Studies.

Scholarship Value

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program has 3 awards:

  • € 10.000 of the tuition fee
  •  € 15.000 of the tuition fee
  •  Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee

Eligibility Criteria

The interested students must have attained performance in their previous education that is vital to the Master’s Program being applied. This is to serve as an indication that the student is among the top 10% of graduates in his/her previous study.

Nationality:Applicant for the scholarship must possess a non-EEA/non-EFTA* passport, and may not be eligible for student finance via the Dutch government.

Scholarships cannot be awarded to applicants who have already obtained a Leiden University Master’s degree, with the exception of students applying for a Master program for which a specified previous Master program or work experience is mandatory.

Scholarships cannot be awarded to students who will follow:

  • an LLM (non-advanced) or MSc programme at Leiden Law School, or
  • a study programme starting in February at the Faculty of Humanities, the Faculty of Sciences or Leiden Law School.

How to Apply

Applicants are to apply online for admission into a Master’s Program at Leiden University. Applicants are to state clearly that he/she would like to  apply for the LExS scholarship and upload your letter of motivation for the LExS scholarship on the scholarship page. Applicant are to submit the scholarship application before deadline as late scholarship application will not be considered.

Academic Requirements

  • Students must have achieved excellent academic results in their previous study program(s), which must be relevant to the Master’s program for which they are applying.
  • As an indication, the student is amongst the top 10% of graduates in his/her previous study program.
  • Note that proof of ranking is not required – this information is purely to indicate the level of competitiveness.

Application Deadline: 1 Feb for programs starting 1 Sept / 1 Oct for programs starting 1 Feb
